  • APP (Amyloid Precursor Protein)
  • PSEN1 (Presenilin 1)
  • PSEN2 (Presenilin 2)

When these genes mutate, they lead to abnormal protein buildup in the brain, causing Alzheimer’s to develop before the age of 65.

Should You Get Genetic Testing for Alzheimer’s?

Genetic testing can provide insights into a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s. However, there are several factors to consider:

  • Testing for risk genes (like APOE-e4) does not predict with certainty whether someone will develop Alzheimer’s.
  • Testing for deterministic genes is only recommended for families with a history of early-onset Alzheimer’s.
  • Genetic counseling is advised before taking a test to help understand the results and implications.

Can Lifestyle Choices Reduce Genetic Risk?

Even if someone has a genetic predisposition, lifestyle choices play a crucial role in reducing risk. Research shows that the following factors can help protect brain health:

  1. Healthy Diet: Following the MIND Diet (a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH diets) has been linked to lower Alzheimer’s risk.
  2. Regular Exercise: Physical activity boosts blood flow to the brain and reduces the risk of cognitive decline.
  3. Mental Stimulation: Engaging in puzzles, reading, and learning new skills can help strengthen brain function.
  4. Social Interaction: Maintaining strong relationships and participating in social activities can help slow cognitive decline.
  5. Quality Sleep: Poor sleep has been linked to Alzheimer’s, so maintaining a regular sleep schedule is crucial.

Final Thoughts

While genetics influence Alzheimer’s risk, they do not determine fate. A healthy lifestyle, combined with early awareness, can help reduce the risk of developing the disease. Genetic testing is an option, but individuals should consult healthcare professionals to weigh the benefits and risks.
